10 academics will receive a classic Tamil award


No less than 10 Tamil scholars and scholars will be awarded the Kalaignar M. Karunanidhi Tamil Classical Award from the Central Institute of Classical Tamil in Chennai for the years 2010 to 2019.

Former University of Pennsylvania professor Dr VS Rajam would receive the award for 2010 and former vice chancellor of the University of Madras Pon. Kothandaraman would receive him for 2011, according to a statement.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Tamil University, Professor E. Sundaramoorthy and former Director of Puducherry Institute of Linguistics and Culture, Professor P. Marudhanayagam, will receive the award for 2012 and 2013 respectively. Former Chairman of the Thirukkural Research Endowment Department at Madras University, Professor K. Mohanarasu would receive him for 2014 and former Tamil teacher at Chennai Presidential College, Maraimalai Ilakkuvanar, for 2015. Professor K Rajan, formerly of the Department of History at the University of Pondicherry, would be awarded the prize for 2016 and Professor Ulrike Niklas, Director of the Institute of Indology and Tamil Studies at the University of Cologne in Germany would receive the award for 2017. For 2018 and 2019, Professor ‘Erode’ Thamizhanban, formerly of New College Chennai and Professor K. Sivamani, formerly of Karanthai Pulavar College of Thanjavur and Thiruvalluvar College of Tirunelveli, would respectively receive the awards.

The award was instituted in 2009, with Professor Asko Parpola of Finland being his first recipient at the Classical Tamil World Conference in Coimbatore in 2010. Chief Minister Mr. Karunanidhi then created the award from his personal funds as that endowment in his name for classical music. Tamil research at the Central Institute of Classical Tamil. From the endowment, a prize would be awarded annually to distinguished academics and researchers. The prize carries a check for 10 lakh, a citation plaque and a bronze replica of the donor. The prize is awarded for the best contribution to classical Tamil studies by a researcher in archeology, epigraphy, numismatics, ancient grammar and linguistic study, literary criticism, creative writing, translation, music, dance, theater, painting and sculpture.
