Brandon Sanderson, author of the popular Mistborn series, the sequel and conclusion to The Wheel of Time, and many other fantasy novels, may be pursuing a future project with Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco.
In a recent episode of Sanderson’s stream, Live with Brandon Sanderson, the author received a promotional box from Bandai Namco including a Lands Between map, a cape, a wooden icon of the endgame boss and de facto Elden Ring mascot, Malenia, and an unsharpened broadsword . Although Sanderson didn’t read the included letter aloud, when asked by a co-host about its contents, he replied, “They’re interested in maybe doing something together, that’s what it is. said, which I also am.”
Sanderson had previously publicly complained of being passed over for a collaboration with FromSoftware in favor of George RR Martin, claiming he had a more personal connection to his games as well as a greater knowledge of video games in general. That seems to be water under the bridge for Sanderson, though – he spoke positively about FromSoft and Bandai Namco’s choice to work with Martin in this recent episode of his stream.
There is no guarantee that these early communications could result in a collaboration between Sanderson and Bandai Namco, but such a relationship could go in many directions, not just a game. My first thought was a graphic novel set in the Lands Between. Bandai Namco previously said it would “develop Elden Ring not only as a game but also in a variety of other areas” in a summer 2021 press release.
Sanderson’s previous work on graphic novels like White Sand and Dark One, coupled with Bandai Namco’s desire to expand on the setting, and the success of previous comic book adaptations of Dark Souls 2 and Bloodborne make this a potentially exciting path.
