Ex-Tamil rebel jailed for attempted murder of ex-SL Prez Gotabaya wins best Tamil novelist award

Colombo, Oct 30 (SocialNews.XYZ) The former Tamil rebel, who was imprisoned for the attempted assassination of Sri Lanka’s former defense secretary-turned-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has won the award for best Tamil novelist at the State Literary Awards.


Prisoner Sivalingam Aarulan’s novel was voted Best Original Tamil Novel at the State Literary Awards held under the patronage of current President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Aarulan, who was charged as one of the defendants in the 2006 bombing for the assassination of Gotabaya Rajapaksa, who was then the powerful Defense Secretary in the government led by his elder brother and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Aarulan, who had earned a bachelor’s degree in engineering, was arrested while studying for his postgraduate degree at a state university.

He has written seven books in Tamil and one in English and all of his books have been nominated for awards and he also won Best Novelist in 2016.

Aarulan was escorted to the literary awards ceremony by prison guards.

Thousands of minority Tamils ​​from northern Sri Lanka, who joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) fought against state security from 1983, demanding separate land from the north and south. east of the island nation.

The rebel group was also responsible for the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Gandhi was killed by a suicide bomb attack on May 21, 1991, while campaigning in Tamil Nadu.

In May 2009, the rebel group was militarily crushed by Sri Lankan security forces, ending a 26-year war.
