House of the Dragon Showrunners Talk Returning to Westeros in New Featurette

HBO Max has tweeted a new teaser featurette Dragon Housethe game of thrones prequel coming this fall. With a new creative team in place to carve out the story with direct involvement from George RR Martin, there’s a lot of pressure ahead of the premiere, as matching the accomplishments of the show’s parent series will be a difficult task. The showrunners talk about these challenges in the featurette, which you can watch below.

“I feel incredibly loyal and responsible to the original series,” says co-showrunner Miguel Sapochnik. “I have a great desire to even be in the same room as this show, because it was a game-changer.”

Delighted to create the series with game of thrones Novelist George RR Martin, co-showrunner Ryan J. Condal adds, “George and his writing have been a huge influence on me. It’s an amazing feeling to do my dream job. You get this great call, which is the thing that every writer is hoping for, telling you, ‘We’re going to do this stuff.’ Then you are happy for a few seconds, then you realize the responsibility that rests on your shoulders.”

“I’m excited,” adds Martin. “It’s always a little nervous when you give your baby to adoptive parents, but I’m involved in that. It’s great to have Ryan, who is a great writer, and someone who knew my world. He’s going to do his best to be faithful to him. I knew Miguel Sapochnik was an amazing director. He won an Emmy, he did some of our best episodes. is that going to be? But I think I’m in good hands with Ryan and Miguel.”

“The idea of returning to Westeros was almost too difficult,” Sapochnik explains in the featurette. “You have to start by respecting him. You can’t start by doing different for the sake of doing different. It was really seeing him from a different angle that interests me.”

Condal noted, “He saw some of the things I saw, and it wasn’t just a prequel for prequel’s sake. There was actually a reason to tell the story. The work of George is really, really an immersive world. There are unexplored, deep recreations and thousands of years of history. The biggest sets I’ve ever been on, the biggest places I’ve ever been, the greatest teams I’ve ever seen. It’s amazing. We really see the creative world in a very similar way.”

On what will make this version different from game of thronesSapochnik also added, “Realizing what worked with thrones and what didn’t work. What do we want to improve? How do we want to evolve? We’re going to start in a more down-to-earth, more intimate way. What a great new chapter in the game of thrones saga.”

Dragon House serves as a prequel series and takes place two centuries before the events of game of thrones, knowing that there is very little chance of crossings. This means the prequel will have to stand on its own with its new cast of characters to tell the story of the beginning of the end of House Targaryen, chronicling the Targaryen Civil War, aka the Dance of the Dragons.

Dragon House is set to premiere on HBO and HBO Max on August 21, 2022.
