The film explores what happens after a female police officer fails to act following a school shooting.

A reporter begins to pursue the story, prompting the survivors to seek justice.

Darklands was made with money from co-producer Sarah Mayberry’s savings.

Mayberry and her husband managed to raise an additional $27,000, with the cast and crew agreeing to defer their fees, AAP reports.

Mayberry, a former Neighbors screenwriter, said filming Darklands was complicated by Covid restrictions.

Best-selling novelist Mills & Boon faced her own drama as filming began when doctors told her she had breast cancer.

She rose to her personal challenge by going into production, she said.

Darklands is the first film produced by bestselling novelist and former Neighbors screenwriter Sarah Mayberry, who helped finance the film with her own money.

“It was an absolutely amazing and wonderful experience and I would do it again in a heartbeat, even though it was also the most stressful experience of my life,” Mayberry said.

The film was made with the help of the writer’s own community on the Mornington Peninsula.

A retired cop allowed Mayberry’s crew to use his land for gruesome scenes of a buried body.

Meanwhile, the local council has granted access to a graveyard and a family has moved out of their home to allow the Darklands crew to use it.

Darklands is directed by former Neighbors star Scott Major with a script by Home and Away writer Christopher Gist.
